The Netherlands is quickly becoming one of the world’s premier hubs for innovation, as evidenced by its start-up culture and vast array of resources available to entrepreneurs. It houses the headquarters of an abundance of well-known brands – Nike, Netflix, Cisco, Booking.com, Panasonic, and Tesla to name just a few. And as more than 135,000 jobs in the Netherlands have been created through start-ups, it’s an ideal location for tech specialists looking to capitalise on the booming tech industry.

Its robust digital infrastructure and reliable connections make it a great place to scale a (tech) firm. And despite ranking 69th in terms of world population, the Netherlands is listed as the 13th largest technology market globally.

The fact that more than 90% of natives speak English mean few barriers for English-speaking foreign talent. Additionally, people tend to enjoy a high standard of living in the Netherlands, yet the cost of living in most parts of the country is relatively low compared to other major cities in Europe. Relocating here can be highly beneficial for professionals who want an improved quality of life, and in particular a great work/life balance.

From the vibrant capital city of Amsterdam (cited as the best city to work in tech in Europe) to the country’s numerous smaller cities (such as Rotterdam and the tech hub of Eindhoven) there are plenty of job opportunities for tech talent in the Netherlands. Many of these jobs offer competitive salaries and great employment packages.

Benefits offered by Dutch companies usually reflect the fact that many employers in the Netherlands place employee satisfaction at the top of their priorities. Employers tend to normalise flexible working patterns and ample vacation time - both important factors for attracting tech professionals considering a move abroad. 20 days’ holidays are given by law (but usually you benefit from more) and they also offer generous parental leave, sick pay arrangements, and much more.

And the Dutch have been leading the way with practices like flexible and remote working which were popular long before the pandemic made them more commonplace elsewhere. In fact, the Netherlands was one of the first countries to grant remote working flexibility a right legally.

On top of this, it’s common for some companies to also provide their employees with stock options or other incentives deemed attractive by prospective hires. Recent changes made by the Dutch government implemented more attractive tax duties for employees with stocks and shares.

But one of the most attractive benefits for expats is the 30% ruling – a tax exemption for employees who were hired abroad to work in the Netherlands, where your employer can pay 30% of your salary as a tax-free allowance. Dutch income tax rates are lower than many other European countries, too!

It’s not just all about work-related perks, though. If you’re seeking a change of scenery, you’ll find much to appreciate in this idyllic destination. From its awe-inspiring tulip fields and picturesque windmills, to its countless bike paths perfect for cyclists of every age and ability - there’s so much more than meets the eye when it comes to life in the Netherlands.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that so many tech specialists around the world are deciding to relocate to the Netherlands —and it doesn’t hurt that many Dutch universities are home to prestigious international programs either! With all these advantages combined, why wouldn’t you consider making this beautiful and inspiring country your new home?
