We are seeking an experienced Freelance Senior Functional Analyst to support a major national infrastructure operator undertaking a multi-year digital transformation of its safety-critical operational procedures.

  • Location: Brussels (Hybrid - approx. 2 days/week on-site)

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyse, document, and refine functional requirements for a core safety-critical application, including a new wizard-style interface designed to guide operational users.
  • Model existing and future-state safety procedures and translate them into structured digital workflows.
  • Work closely with developers to ensure functional specifications are fully and accurately implemented.
  • Design and execute test scenarios for both new features and regression testing.
  • Gather business requirements using interviews, workshops, documentation analysis, and process mapping.
  • Produce clear user stories, functional specifications, and user-facing documentation.
  • Collaborate with operational teams, safety experts, and technical squads in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Support end-users, ensuring the application effectively enables correct and safe execution of operational processes.

Ideal Candidate
  • 10–15 years of experience as a Functional Analyst in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Strong experience with requirements gathering, process modelling (UML, BPMN), and writing detailed user stories.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute test cases and validation scenarios.
  • Skilled in translating operational needs into clear, structured functional designs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable engaging with operational teams, technical teams, and management levels.
  • Able to quickly understand highly specific safety or infrastructure-related processes.
  • Proactive, rigorous, and capable of working both autonomously and collaboratively within a mature product team.

Desirable
  • Experience in safety-critical or infrastructure environments (e.g., rail, utilities, transport).
  • Familiarity with railway operations or signalling is highly valued, but not essential.
  • Previous work in long-running Agile product teams or environments with high operational impact.
  • Ability to produce clear documentation (work instructions, user guides, functional designs).
